Notices of Sales - George Lyon's Estate

Objective of this post is to obtain a description of George Lyon's mills through written records of the period.  Place sources in chronological order.

George Lyon listed his profession as "gentleman"  As well as 1 inhabited house Lyon identified  2 vacant houses.  He employed 3 male farm servants and 2 female  servants in the private family. He listed 1,063 acres of which 87 are "improved".  The farm produced 300 bushels of barley, 300 bushels of oats, 10 bushels of Indian corn and 400 bushels of potatoes.  (These are "Wincgester" (sic) bushels).  He owned 12 neat cattle, 3 horses and 80 hogs.  The land is deeded.  As well he has:
-1 grist mill
-2 pairs of mill stones per mill
-1 saw mill
-1 fulling mill

-1 carding mill

Description of Equipment In George Lyon's Mills
 - 1 Grist Mill belonging to the estate of the late George Lyon with four run of stones wrought by water.  (4 employees in winter, 2 in summer.)
- 1 Distillery belonging to the same worked by water only during the winter months mashing 25 bushels of grain per day.  (2 employees)
- 1 saw mill with one upright and one circular saw worked by water.  (2 employees)
- 1 fulling mill, shearing and cloth dyeing machinery worked by water.  (1 employee
- average quantity of grain ground in grist mill 30,000 bushels of wheat per year, 12,000 other grain
- The distillery produces on an average 65 gal spirits per day
- the sawmill cuts with the upright saw 5,000 feet (board feet? - RAM) of pine in 24 hours.

The mills are generally stopped about two months of the year for want of water but this winter there has been fair unusual scarce of water which has caused them to be idle since September last and every appearance of them being so until the spring opens up.

Valuable Mill Property
For Sale Or To Let
On Reasonable Terms

That Valuable and well known Mill Property, situate on and adjoining the village of Richmond in the County of Carleton within 21 miles of Bytown and 13 of the Rideau River, belonging to the estate of the late George Lyon, consisting of 1,150 acres of land, a large part of which is in a good state of cultivation. 

There are two Mill Dams on the premises;  on the upper of which (being about half a mile from the lower) there is erected a large two story Stone Building in which are two Carding Machines, a Picker, Fulling Mill, Shearing Machine, Cloth press, Dye Kettle, etc, all in full operation; on the lower dam, where there is ten feet head of water, is erected a Grist Mill, Saw Mill and Distillery.

The Grist Mill, which together with the works, stones and belts, are all nearly new, is built of stone, and contains four run of Burr Stones with bolts, to each, two of which are driven by separate cast iron reaction wheels, and the other two by a breast wheel; there are also two sinut?  (Check this word!)  Machines driven by a cast iron reaction wheel.  The Mill is large and conveniently arranged for storing and working  it. 

The Distillery which is built of Stone, is capable of mashing 25 Bushels per day, is worked by water, and arranged so as to require very little labout in working it. 
There is a large dwelling House on the premises with Garden and Orchard attached, besides four others which are used as workmen's residences, also a large Barn and yard with sheds and stables, all conveniently arranged for keeping and fattening cattle, etc. 

The business of the above establishment is large, and as the surrounding country is becoming very extensive, the active demand for everything produced by the same continues to increase.

(Note - Thomas Radenhurst is George Lyon's brother-in-law.  Radenhurst died 0 7 August 1854)

Notice published in "The Union" (Ottawa), 15 September 1859 Valuable Mill Property
For Sale Or To Let,
On Reasonable Terms

THAT Valuable, and well-known Mill Property belonging to the Estate of the late GEORGE LYON, situate in the Village of Richmond, in the County of Charlatan, with twenty miles of the city of Ottawa, (the future Seat of Government) to which place there is a good macadamized Road, and within a short distance of the Rideau Canal, consisting of a large and convenient Grist Mill, with Four Run of Burr Stones, and all requisite machinery; Saw Mill with circular, upright and crosscut saws; Distillery, with Malt Kiln, good Cellars, Yards, Cattle Sheds, etc; Carding Mill with two machines, Picher, Fulling Mill, Shearing Machine, Cloth Press, Dye Kettle, etc.  The above property is all suitably arranged for working with a small number of hands, has generally a good supply of water, having a long reserve dam, and in addition there is a twenty horse power steam engine arranged to connect at any time with the Grist Mill, all complete an perfectly new. 

There is a large cleared Farm of excellent land in connection therewith, on which is a Dwelling-house, Garden and Orchard, Men's Residence, etc., etc. 

The Business done by the above Establishment is large, but the same must be sold to comply with the terms of the Testator's Will. 

Also a number of Park and Village Lots.
